Is there an older adult or person with a disability in your family or neighborhood? Be a friend. Help them register for Carrier Alert.
If living alone worries you, Carrier Alert can offer you the comfort of knowing that someone who visits your home regularly will call for help if you need it. This free service has been developed especially for older adults and people with disabilities - those who may have difficulty reaching vital services in the case of an accident or sudden illness.
If you are registered with Carrier Alert, your Letter Carrier will provide a special services for you. A Carrier Alert decal will be placed on the inside of your mailbox. If your Letter Carrier notices an accumulation of mail or any other signs that might suggest you are in distress, it will be reported to Great Rivers 2-1-1.
An Information & Referral Specialist at Great Rivers 2-1-1 will immediately try to contact you by phone. If you cannot be reached, they will call the individuals you listed as emergency contacts. If the contact people cannot be reached, the police will be notified and asked to check on your health and well-being.
If you have any questions or would like to become part of the Carrier Alert Program, please call Great Rivers 2-1-1 by dialing 2-1-1 or 800-362-8255.
The program was implemented in 1984 by First Call For Help as a service of Gundersen Lutheran and is made possible through a cooperative effort of participating post offices and letter carriers in the La Crosse area.
